10 Questions that Keto Diet Beginners Want Answers To

I constantly get asked questions about the keto diet. So I put together this list of 10 questions that keto diet beginners need answers to.

Each question has easy to understand answers - perfect for starting the keto diet.

I also include a short video answering these 10 questions for keto diet beginners. Perfect for those who don't want to read!

Let's keto on!

1. What is the keto diet?

The keto diet, also known as the ketogenic diet, is a low carb, high fat, and moderate protein way of eating.

It puts the body into a state of metabolic ketosis.

2. What is ketosis?

While the body begins to release glucose stores, The liver starts to use the fats you eat to develop ketones.

The body begins to burn ketones or fat instead of carbs or sugar.

3. How do I know I'm in ketosis?

There are 4 ways to tell if your body is in ketosis. 3 of those ways will cost you money. Those 3 ways are urine strips, breathalyzers, and blood testing kits.

Unless you are tracking ketones for medical reasons, you don’t need to use any of the 3 testing methods that I just mentioned.

Besides knowing whether or not you’re in ketosis, the average person doesn’t have much more use knowing what their exact ketone levels are.

Personally, I use method 4. Or as I like to call it the “free method.”

I can tell I’m in ketosis by listening to my body. When I’m running off of ketones I feel way more energized. I can go longer periods without feeling hungry and I don’t crave carbs or sugars.

If it’s your first time going into ketosis you may even experience a fruity taste in your breath. That temporary taste is excess ketones leaving the body. It will stop once your body adjusts.

4. Is the keto diet easy?

After all that information, you may be wondering if the keto diet is easy to stick to. I wondered about that too when I first learned about the keto diet.

But keto has been the easiest diet I’ve ever followed. After some minor adjustments, I still get to fill up my favorite foods like chili, broccoli cheese soup, and breakfast muffins.

All while eating healthy and losing weight.

My sugar cravings have disappeared and I never felt better.

5. Is the keto diet expensive?

If you haven’t cooked much at home prior to starting the keto diet, then yes your initial grocery trip could cost you more than you normally spend.

Staying on track with a meal plan will help to keep costs low.

Using my meal plan, I cook so many tasty and easy keto meals that my whole family enjoys.

So instead of buying separate ingredients and making multiple meals, like I had to do with other diets in the past, I can make delicious meals for everyone.

6. What types of foods can I eat?

Now, this is the million-dollar question.

I love food so the biggest turn on for me when incorporating keto into my life was the types of foods I could eat.

You can enjoy things like eggplants, spaghetti squash, lamb, beef, cream cheese. Blueberries. Even tempeh (tem-pay) if you’re vegan.

7. Can the keto diet help with medical conditions?

The keto diet can help with medical conditions. Keto actually became popular in the 1920’s for its success with childhood epilepsy.

Nowadays there are people with other medical conditions like diabetes that have used the keto diet to reduce medicine reliability.

If you do have a medical condition, it may be beneficial to talk to your doctor about keto benefits and create a health plan.

8. Do I need to exercise to lose weight?

You don’t necessarily need to exercise to lose weight on the keto diet, but exercise will help speed up and maintain your weight loss and health goals long term.

If you aren’t currently active, I recommend starting with a very light exercise routine. A 20-minute walk around the neighborhood 3 times a week is a great place to start.

I personally do HIIT and weight training along with keto and fasting.

9. Can I drink alcohol while on keto?

In general, most alcoholic beverages have a high carb content. So they should not be consumed.

Good news though there are light beers and clear liquors you can enjoy moderately. Always check nutritional fact labels before drinking.

Keep in mind that alcohol may affect you differently because your body is running off of ketones. Start slow and drink responsibly.

10. Where can I find keto recipes?

You can use search engines like Google and Pinterest for keto recipes.

On my website, easyketomenus.com , I’m always creating a lot of great keto recipes. I include Marco counts as well - perfect for people who are serious about their health goals!
