The Keto Diet

To really understand the keto diet we need to start with the most basic of questions… What is the keto diet?

Instead of relying on glucose the ketogenic diet or keto is a low carb, high fat, and moderate protein diet that uses broken down fat, also known as ketones, as the body's main source of energy.

This complete change in the way your body is fueled allows for a huge switch up in the metabolic system. Everything from a cellular level up is completely shifted to run off of ketones. 

Benefits range from mind to body.

Allowing such incredible changes such as lowered blood sugar levels, mental clarity, improved PCOS issues, increased brain health, reduced inflammation, and the very sought after loss of stubborn fat.

All of these benefits and more are brought about by simply changing the way we eat.

Focusing more on nutrient dense whole foods over pre-packaged or sugary products. Which is why so many people find success when following a keto diet.

Understanding the Keto Diet

Let’s use a car analogy.

Now I’m not a car expert, but I have been hearing my husband talk about car fuel lately, so I figured this would be a perfect fit and easy enough for both men and women to understand.

Imagine you’re at a gas station. Standing right in front of the pump. You see your fuel options. Everything from regular ethanol gas to premium non-ethanol gas.

So, now you’re wondering what to pick. Ethanol or non-ethanol.

Non-ethanol gas supplies better mileage, is better for car engine health (especially older cars),  and has a longer shelf-life.

Ethanol gas, especially ethanol gas with a high percent of ethanol can gunk up engines, cause rust, and in smaller engines cause overheating and corrosion very quickly.

We all want our cars to run their absolute best. It’s important, so that we can get around safely. The right fuel allows our vehicles to last longer and run better. This ensures that we have less overall car trouble and better overall mileage.

Now from my car analogy, replace the words “ethanol” and “gas” with food. And replace the word “car” with body. Your body.

The Right Fuel to Help you Reach Your Goals

Eating the right foods allows for you to run your best with less need to constantly get your engine, AKA body, fixed.

Now, if you’ve been consuming the wrong fuel for your body over a long period of time, years or decades even, there may be some transitional bumps along the way.

Your body will be so used to eating and drinking certain products that once you shift into using a better fuel you’ll start to notice an adjustment period.

In the keto world we like to call this the “keto flu”

The keto flu may be something as simple as sugar cravings to something a bit more... flu-like.

Length and variation of flu symptoms depend on your health status before starting the keto diet. For some, symptoms last only one or two days. And for others, symptoms can last up to 3 weeks.

There are a few factors that determine the length and type of keto flu symptoms. They include:

  • Your health status before starting a keto or low carb diet
  • Your current diet (lots of sugars, carbs, highly processed foods, etc)
  • Your nutrient intake - Are you getting enough vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes?

We have to remember that we DID NOT become unhealthy overnight. We might not like to admit this but it took many conscious decisions over years for us to get where we are now.

Many thoughts of “Just one more handful of candy.” or the classic “I’ll start tomorrow” when its really been 5 years since we planned to change our diet habits.  

So, although we might wish that there was a magic pill to erase the years of sugary sweets and get healthy overnight, there isn’t. 

The best we can do is to just start.

To commit to ourselves that even when we make a mistake we’ll keep going. A mistake does NOT mean absolute failure. It means you’re human. We all make mistakes.  But when you make the conscious choice to dust yourself off and keep moving forward It means you are on the track to growing. 

You’ll hit your goals with that attitude.
